The Discovery Channel - London 2012 Olympics & Paralympics

During the Summer of 2012, Sonja was commissioned by the Discovery Channel to undertake a Photographic Documentary Project, documenting London life around the 2012 London Olympics and Paralympics.  The resulting images captured London residents, visitors and workers interacting in the city whilst the whole World was watching.

The work featured here was shown to the World on The Discovery Channel's Photo Finish Gallery website and also featured in a Public Exhibition after the event.

Testimonial - The Olympic and Paralympic Games transform any city they are hosted in; London 2012 was no different. What Discovery Channel wanted to try and do was capture this transformation.

We commissioned six photographers to go out for the duration of both events and document everything from how communities embraced the Games to the accompanying Cultural Olympiad, from face-painting to the weather. Sonja was one of the photographers commissioned.

Encompassing one Olympic or Paralympic day is a challenge, from a geographical and logistical point of view. This meant that Sonja had to be in the field for early morning to late afternoon, traversing the city looking for telling images. That’s exactly what she achieved. Long hours travelling across London paid dividends, which her images are testament to. She managed to photograph some incredible, tender, funny and thought-provoking moments that always delivered on the brief and with Sonja’s unique vision.

It was a pleasure working with Sonja and I wouldn’t hesitate to do so again."
